Development of a Waterproofing Agent for Exterior Walls Based on Recycled Expanded Polystyrene

Abstract

Plastic pollution, particularly expanded polystyrene (EPS), poses a significant global environmental
challenge, and El Salvador is no exception. EPS, commonly known as Styrofoam, is widely used in
containers, packaging, and disposable utensils; however, its improper disposal and slow degradation
have detrimental impacts on ecosystems and human health due to the ingestion of its particles
by organisms, such as fish, affecting the food chain. This study proposes the development of a
waterproofing agent for exterior walls using recycled EPS, aiming to transform a polluting material
into a constructive solution that reduces moisture in buildings and the demand for new resources,
thereby contributing to the mitigation of plastic pollution. The research, conducted in San Miguel, El
Salvador, from February to December 2024, focuses on identifying the processes and components
necessary to formulate an effective moisture sealant. Preliminary results suggest that this initiative is
not only feasible but also has the potential to be applied in various locations, promoting the innovative
reuse of EPS within the framework of sustainable development.
