Strengthening labor skills for the economic reintegration of returned migrants and internally displaced persons

Abstract

Irregular migration and forced displacement are phenomena that are observed in many countries and societies, (IOM, 2021) El Salvador is not the exception among the various nations of the globe, large population contingents mobilize both outside and within the national borders seeking economic and job opportunities that they do not easily find in their places of origin.
Many of these people, during the time spent coming and going to and from different locations, have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities empirically and semi-formally, which need to be identified, strengthened and shared with other people interested in having them.
This article presents results obtained from data collection from 122 people, including returned migrants and internally displaced persons, through intentional or directed sampling. Aspects related to their economic reintegration are addressed, exploring their acquired work skills and expectations regarding the support they need from assistance organizations, as a basis for the formulation of public policies for their benefit.
